Ernakulam Gramajana Samooham

Our History

Brahmin families originating from the historic Chola and Pandyan regions of Tamil Nadu, who settled in Kerala centuries ago, continue to uphold their linguistic and cultural heritage. In the absence of clustered living arrangements like Agraharams, they spearheaded the cooperative movement by establishing Samooha Madhoms in Kerala to facilitate communal rituals and practices. These Samoohams, borne out of the collective effort and sacrifice of our ancestors, stand as enduring symbols of Brahmin tradition, maintained and protected through generations despite limited resources. The migration of Tamil Brahmins from Tirunelveli and Tanjore to Kerala lacks definitive historical documentation. The transition from these two distinct regions to Kerala and the subsequent engagement in trades such as handloom textiles and banking remain subjects of speculation.
Traversing arduous mountainous routes, these pioneering Brahmins placed their trust in Lord Dharma Sastha for safety and prosperity. Ernakulam Gramajana Samooham, established in 1872, exemplifies this spirit of unity and resilience, evident through its diverse spiritual, cultural, and social initiatives. As one of the few Samooha Madams boasting robust infrastructure and membership, it continues to evolve while preserving the cherished traditions and values of our esteemed community.
